Sheila. Concept redesigns of real LA businesses. Not affiliated with either.

Los Angeles

Good businesses, bad websites. Sheila fixes the second part.

Two neighborhood businesses with hundreds of five-star reviews and websites built before the iPhone. Below, each one rebuilt with the same real information, hours, phone, services, and nothing invented, on a site that works on a phone and makes the call easy.

What "poor quality" meant here. Both originals fail on a phone (no viewport), one still serves over plain http, one is laid out in nested tables from the 2000s and the other is a 2014 blog theme with a single post as its homepage. Both bury the phone number and hours.

Kien Giang Bakery

Echo Park · Vietnamese-Chinese bakery since 1980 · 4.8 stars on 168 Google reviews
  • Not mobile-friendly: no viewport, fixed 660px table layout
  • Font and bgcolor tags, document.write, no heading structure
  • Their best product (40+ mooncake varieties, a citywide draw every fall) is a red text link
BeforeThe original dandrupholstery.com homepage: dark blog theme with one post and a sidebar

D & R Upholstery

Beverly Blvd · repair, reupholstery and custom furniture · 4.9 stars on 35 Google reviews
  • Plain http, no viewport, a 2014 blog theme with one post as the homepage
  • Gallery, About and Video links all 404
  • The service list is a sidebar of one-word items; no way to ask for an estimate

Only what is true

Every hour, address, phone number, product and service on these pages comes from the business's own site or Google listing. No invented testimonials, prices or promises.

Built for the phone first

Both redesigns put the phone number, hours and directions within one thumb of the top of the page, because that is why most people visit a bakery or upholstery shop's site.

One page, done right

Neither business needs a ten-page site. Each redesign is a single fast page with clear sections, a map, and a form that goes nowhere until the owner says so.
